Daring to Dream

Memorable Moments: The Little Mermaid

Atlantica, home of the merpeople.

I remember watching the movie for the first time, I was totally awed by the amount of detail and realism given to the watery atmosphere. I'd seen other versions of The Little Mermaid before, but this was the first one that made me truly believe that such a world could exist. And the haunting opening sequence music still gives me goosebumps.

Ariel: "Not getting cold fins now, are you?"

The first of mer-isms in the movie.

Ariel: "Have you see anything so wonderful in your entire life?"

Ariel's wide-eyed wonder at something as simple as a fork.

Flounder: "What was that? Did you hear something?"
Ariel: "Flounder, will you relax? Nothing's going to happen!"
Ursula: "In my day we had fantastical feasts... When I lived in the palace."

Ursula's snacktime...

Scuttle's amusing but completely useless explanation for the use of a fork.

Ursula is just too cool. Unlike her other classic predecessors (eg. The Stepmother, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil), Ursula has a refined outward appearance that hides a core of raw malice and snarling anger. With that depth, she is more three-dimensional than those who came before her.

Ariel: "Nothing... happened."

After Flounder slips up in front of King Triton, Ariel has a weak go at defense. But Triton's seen too much of this behaviour to be easily willed by Ariel's innocent wide-eyed look.

The entire Part of That World sequence... This is one of my favourite Disney songs of all time. It's heart of the movie, and the heart of Ariel's character. Even after all this time, it leaves me breathless.

Ariel: "It's just my collection."

After Sebastian makes his presence known in her secret grotto, Ariel proves once again she's terrible at defense, and even worse at lying.

Ariel first sets her eyes upon Eric.

Eric's reaction to his birthday present from Grimsby. There's something about the pose and dramatic grandeur of the statue that's just... wrong.

The storm ... It's the event that will start up a chain reaction that'll change Ariel and Eric's lives forever. It was quite a bad storm at that. Was King Triton in a bad mood or something?

Ariel saves Eric's life. We never did hear him say thank you in the film, though.

Beached. Singing does wonders for reviving near-drowned princes. This is actually my favourite scene in the entire movie. The pose, the music, the earthiness of the animation, the feeling that you know something has happened, it all just adds up beautifully.

Ursula: "It's too easy!"

Things that are too good to be true usually are, but villains never have the foresight for that sort of thing.

Attina: "She's got it bad."
King Triton: "What? What has she got?"
Adrina: "Isn't it obvious, daddy? Ariel's in love."

Ariel's sisters are bewildered by her dreamy behaviour. By the way, I love Attina's funky hairdo (she's the one with the spikes).

Ariel: "He loves me... He loves me not... He loves me! I knew it!"

Total girl-in-love symptoms. I just love Ariel's dizzy giggle!

Sebastian: "Somebody's got to pin that girl's fins to the floor."

Despite going all out with the Under the Sea sequence, Sebastian finds it has actually no effect on Ariel's point of view.

Sebastian: "Yes, Your Majesty?"

A very nervous Sebastian answers King Triton's summons, thinking that he knows what he knows when actually he only thinks he knows something which is not the thing that Sebastian thinks he knows.

Sebastian: "I tried to stop her, sir! But she wouldn't listen! I told her to stay away from humans, they are bad, they are trouble!"
King Triton: "Humans? What about humans?!"

Sebastian lets it slip.

The confrontation.

Ariel: "Daddy, I love him!"
Triton: "No... Have you lost your senses completely? He's a human, you're a mermaid!"
Ariel: "I don't care!"
Triton: "So help me, Ariel, I'm going to get through to you. And if this is the only way, so be it."

Destruction of the grotto.
Flotsam: "We represent someone who can help you."
Jetsam: "Someone who can make all your dreams come true."

Ariel makes a choice. Her father just pushed her too hard on this one.

Ariel: "My voice?"

Ursula, ever the shmoozer, names her price.

Ursula shakes her booty. :D

Ursula takes Ariel's voice. This is an absolutely haunting sequence.

When I was a kid I had a classmate who loved to re-enact this scene for no apparent reason in front of the class. And that classmate was a boy. Heh.

Ariel gets her legs.
Ariel surfaces with her classic hair-toss.
Ariel moves her toes in fascination. It's this kind of innocentcuriosity that I love about her.
Scuttle: "Look at ya! Look at ya! There's something different, isn't there?"

Scuttle's scatterbrained persona.

Ariel does Bambi eyes for Sebastian. How can anyone resist?
Eric: "Oh."

Eric sees Ariel for the first time.

Eric: "You can't speak?"

So close and yet so far!

Eric: "Wow, you must've really been through something."
Scuttle and Flounder give Ariel encouragement.
Of all places in the palace Sebastian had to end up in, it had to be the kitchen, didn't it?
Grimsby: "Isn't she a vision?"

Yes. Yes, she is.

Ariel tries to show off her knowledge on dinglehoppers. :D

Sebastian watches the dinner preparations. This scene is purely for comic relief and doesn't contribute to the story in any way, yet has succeeded in becoming memorable. Perhaps it foreshadows the unaddressed problem in the love story: How will Ariel adapt to life on land?

Louie: "What is zis?"
Grimsby: "Now let's eat, before this crab wanders off my plate."
Triton: "What have I done?"

King Triton regrets his actions. Of course, this guilt is pivotal to the plot later on...

Ariel's enthusiasm in sight-seeing Eric's kingdom is just too cute. She's finally able to explore the human world to her heart's content.
Ariel's reaction to Scuttle's "romantic" singing which pretty much says it all.
So Sebastian takes it upon himself to create the mood. (And he does waaaay better, although that goes without saying.)
Her name's definitely not Mildred.
Almost...
Ursula: "That was close! Too close! The little tramp! She's better than I thought."

Of course she is! She's Ariel!

Eric decides that Ariel's the one for him. Yay! This is important, because it shows that Eric is in love with Ariel, and not only her voice that he heard on the beach.

Ariel overhears Eric's decision to wed Vanessa.
Whether she's a purple octopus lady or a human chick with amazingeyebrows, Ursula's still just too cool.
Ursula: "What a lovely little bride I'll make, my dear, I'll look divine / Things are working out according to my ultimate design / Soon I'll have that little mermaid and the ocean will be mine..."
Scuttle: "The witch! The witch was watching the mirror, and she was singing with a stolen set of pipes!"

Surprisingly, this roundabout blathering is one of my favourite funny speeches in animated moviedom.

Don't diss the dog. He's smarter than every single human being on that ship.
Oooh, Ursula doesn't look too happy.

Sometimes when I watch this scene, I like to mentally superimpose the image of Ursula on top of Vanessa. The final effect actually creeps me out a bit, because I don't think those animals would have had the courage to attack Ursula had she been, you know, in her scary octopus lady form.

XD
Ariel gets her voice back. Yay!
Sunset...
Too late...
And Ariel's back to her true form.
Ursula decides she's much more comfortable in her own tentacles. One of the coollest transformation scenes in an animated flick.
Triton makes a sacrifice for Ariel.
Meet Triton, the polyp formerly known as King.
Ursula starts her gloating session.
Ariel gives Ursula's hair a sharp tug to save her sweetheart. Merrreooow!
King Triton: "I guess there's just one problem left."
Sebastian: "And what's that, Your Majesty?"
King Triton: "How much I'm going to miss her."
King Triton lets Ariel be who she wants to be.
Don't worry, we'll meet again in the sequel. But still, parting is such sweet sorrow...
Ariel: "I love you, daddy."
Happy ending...
